Our Heritage
Casemates Square
Welcome to The Lord Nelson. You are sitting in the heart of Gibraltar's history. Originally a sandy beach in the Moorish period (c. 1160), this site was transformed by the Spanish into a shipyard known as La Barcina. Following the British takeover in 1704, the square became a vital military parade ground.
The name "Casemate" refers to the fortified, bombproof structures built into the walls to protect soldiers and artillery, where you sit today. These "Grand Casemates" barracks were completed in 1817. Once a site for public executions and later a 20th-century car park, the square was refurbished in the 1990s into the vibrant, pedestrianised hub of dining and culture you see today — home to our National Day and New Year's Eve celebrations. Welcome!
